Requesting Materials Through Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
Answer
There might be times when you can’t find a particular material in the GSU collection or the I-Share libraries, or there might be times when you only want an individual chapter of a book or a single article in a journal. In these situations, you’ll want to make an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request.
There are two ways you can fill out the ILL request: using the catalog or filling out the form directly.
Open the Library Catalog and sign in with your GSU username and password (do not include @student.govst.edu in the username).
Once you are signed in, click on the drop down in the search bar and select “All I-Share Libraries.” This will allow you to search all the materials available through I-Share.
After selecting “All I-Share Libraries” enter your search terms and click the search button.
Once you have entered the search, the results will appear. Look through the results to see if the material you are looking for is there.
If you do not find the material, you are looking for you can:
- Check to make sure the information you entered in the search bar is correct
- Change your search terms
- Create a citation (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) to submit an ILL request the other way (see Filling Out the Form Directly)
If you do find the material, select the title of the material you want request.
After selecting the material, the catalog entry will come up. In the catalog entry find the section titled “How to get it” click on ILL Request. Clicking on it will take you to the ILL Request form.
[Note: the example text has an I-Share option. Many materials will have both I-Share and ILL options, but some may have one or the other.]
Start by filling out the required fields: affiliation, name, GSU ID number, and GSU email. This information is necessary for verifying your affiliation with GSU and having the material request attached to the correct account. If you’re accessing the form from the catalog, your name and GSU email should automatically populate.
The next section of the form to fill out is the citations section. This is where you will enter the citations for the materials you’d like to request. You may use whichever citation style you prefer including but not limited to: MLA, APA, and Chicago.
The library catalog can generate a citation for you. The catalog entry for the material you’re requesting has a task bar under the heading “Send to”. In this task bar you’ll find a button with quotation marks labelled “citation”, click this button. Clicking “citation” will create a drop down with the generated citation. Click “copy citation to clipboard” then navigate back to your ILL Request form.
Once you’re back in the form paste the citation in the box provided.
You can request up to 5 materials per form. You can request a variety of materials using ILL including articles, print books, book chapters, and DVDs. The graphic below includes examples of citations for 3 types of materials you can request using ILL.

There are two more fields that are optional. The first field is for distance learners if they meet the following criteria:
- All of your GSU courses are online-only (no on-campus class meeting)
- AND you live more than 50 miles from GSU (if unsure, check Google Maps)
If you meet both of these criteria, then you can enter your mailing address in the first box.
The second field is for special instruction or additional information you’d like to provide. If you have either of those, then you can enter them into the second box.
Once you’ve completed all the necessary fields, review your entire form and make sure all the information is correct. After verifying the information is correct, click the “submit” button at the bottom of the form.
It will take time to process the request, receive the requested materials, and ready them for pick-up. When the materials arrive and are ready for pick-up, you will receive an email notification.
**Please note that certain materials such as journal articles or single book chapters will be delivered digitally (as PDFs) via email.
For physical materials, after you receive the email notification, go to the Circulation desk in the GSU Library and inform the worker at the desk that you have materials ready for pick-up. Present your OneCard to the worker and they will retrieve your materials and aid you in checking the materials out.
