How to Find a Journal Article

Answer

You can easily search for or locate journal articles using the Library Catalog. The Catalog also helps you narrow your results to just peer-reviewed (scholarly) articles.

Finding a Journal Article

Open the Library Catalog and sign in with your GSU username and password (do not include @student.govst.edu in the username).

Once you’ve opened the catalog, navigate to “Advanced Search” which is to the right of the search bar. Click “Advanced Search” to open the menu.

First make sure you’ve selected “GSU Resources” under the “Search For” heading.

Next, navigate to the right side of the menu and change the “Material Type” dropdown to “Articles”. This will narrow your search to exclusively articles.

Then to the left of the dropdown bars is where you can enter the title of an article or your select search terms. You can also edit search fields to narrow or broaden your search, as necessary.

Finally, after you’ve entered all your search terms you can click “Search” at the bottom of the menu. Clicking “Search” will generate a list of results.

When you click on an article title it will open a listing for the article with more information.

Look for the heading that says, “View Online.” Under this heading you will find all the ways you can access the article. Select one of the options to gain access to the article.

Finding Peer-Reviewed (Scholarly) Articles

After you’ve generated the search results, a sidebar will appear to the right of the results which will allow you to further filter your search.

Under “Availability” in this sidebar you will find an option to filter by “Peer-reviewed Journals” which will only show you results that have been peer-reviewed.

Once you’ve found an article you’d like to access, select the title of the article in the search results to bring up the options for access.
